Take a retired actress mother who can’t let go of her most famous role, throw in her aging novelist husband in a midlife crisis and add their two bored adolescent children and what do you get? Nothing. Have them invite several guests into their un-inviting house and what do you get? Entertainment.
The Bliss Family from SWT's presentation of Noel Coward’s “Hay Fever” include from left to right, Jack Smith (Simon), Brendan Flood (David), Tricia McNatt (Judith) and Emily Neves (Sorel).
This is the setting for Noel Coward’s popular British comedy, Hay Fever, which runs from Nov. 19 through Nov. 24 in the Theatre Center at Southwest Texas State University.
In Hay Fever, the Bliss family is far from what their name suggests. Aside from being a bit eccentric, the family also lacks social skills, which doesn’t help their reputation when they invite several guests to stay for the weekend.
Judith, the mother, turns the living room into the stage, reenacting an over-the-top romance role to woo her young male guests.
Her husband acts no more maturely as he seeks the company of his son’s girlfriend, and the children just can’t have enough fun toying with the emotions of the guests. The guests soon realize that they are merely unwilling participants in the family’s drama of life.
Come out and catch Hay Fever and see what it feels like to be a guest in this tumultuous household.
