SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — One of the largest multicultural recruitment fairs in the country will celebrate its 10th anniversary at Southwest Texas State University April 8-9. The 10th National Multicultural Job Expo coincides with the SWT Centennial Celebration, which is being observed throughout the 1998-99 academic year.
Recruiters from more than 200 national employers are expected to meet with close to 3,000 prospective applicants over the two-day event scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day in Strahan Coliseum on the SWT campus. Reservations and information about special lodging and transportation discounts can be found on SWT’s Career Services website at http://www.careerservices.txstate.edu/ or by calling (512) 245-2645.
Business, government and industry will be featured on Thursday, April 8, and business, industry, government and education will be featured on Friday, April 9.
“We are fortunate to attract such a diverse group of employers who will come prepared to employ qualified individuals in a variety of positions,” said Curtis Schafer, director of career planning and placement at SWT.
The list of participating companies reads like a “Who’s Who” of major U.S. corporations including J.C. Penney Co., Xerox Corp., State Farm Insurance, FIC Insurance Group, Occidental Chemcial Corp., Kraft Foods, Advanced Micro Devices, Mayo Foundation and U.S. Department of Labor. In addition to major corporations, the job expo will feature 60 school districts from coast to coast.
Current students, recent graduates or individuals thinking about changing jobs or careers have the opportunity to get information from or interview with a variety of companies, governmental agencies and school districts. Although the multicultural job expo targets workforce diversity initiatives, it is inclusive and open to all students and graduates.
“The quality of the students continues to be praised by the employers who participate in the job expo each year giving us a national reputation as one of the leading job expos of this kind,” added Schafer. “We are pleased that we continue to attract the high caliber applicants who keep the employers coming back year after year.”
SWT coordinates and hosts the job expo, with assistance from the J.C. Penney Co., the Xerox Corp. and the San Antonio Colleges and Universities Placement Association.
