This activity relates to all of the standards for teacher evaluation.
For this activity, you need a copy of the evaluation of teaching process documents used in a school or district—your own or one to which you have ready access. These documents are to include a thorough description of the evaluation process and any forms or instruments used to evaluate teachers. Carefully review the evaluation documents and place numbers corresponding to the six standards discussed in this chapter on the documents in all places where evidence of each standard occurs (using a different color for each number is a good idea).
Then, prepare a 100 to 200 word description about how each of the six teaching evaluation standards are addressed in the process that you are examining. For each of the six evaluations of teaching standards, recommend a change that will make the evaluation process more consistent with each standard.
Next, interview a supervisor who uses the evaluation teaching process you have reviewed. Ask that supervisor to discuss the changes you have recommended in terms of how they meet the following standards as defined and identified by the Joint Committee for Personnel Evaluation Standards: The propriety standards require that evaluations be conducted legally, ethically, and with due regard for the welfare of evaluatees and clients.
The utility standards are intended to guide evaluations so that they will be informative, timely, and influential.
The feasibility standards call for evaluation systems that are as easy to implement as possible, efficient in their use of time and resources, adequately funded, and viable from a number of other standpoints.
The accuracy standards require that the obtained information be technically accurate and that conclusions be linked logically to the data (retrieved from http://www.eval.org/EvaluationDocuments/perseval.html ).
Finally prepare a written report of the supervisor’s comments and revise your recommended changes to the current evaluation of teaching process in light of those comments.
Assessment Criteria
Content analysis of evaluation of teaching documents and written descriptions of evidence of the six evaluations of teaching standards are comprehensive.
Recommended changes for each standard offer evidence that the standards are well understood.
The written interview report provides a thorough account of the supervisor’s comments on the recommended changes to the current evaluation process.
Post interview revisions of recommended changes to the current evaluation of teaching process indicate awareness of the Personnel Evaluation Standards.
