The H-E-B Tournament of Champions, the charitable golf tournament hosted by the Texas grocery chain, has announced a $15,000 donation to support the 2014 Mathworks Junior Summer Math Camps (JSMC).  This is the fourth year of funding provided by the Tournament of Champions, providing central Texas students opportunities to build a solid mathematical foundation while having fun learning in the summer.

For over 26 years, H-E-B’s Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust has contributed to worthy causes throughout Texas.  H-E-B’s Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust is a special fund that receives its money from an annual golf tournament sponsored by H-E-B’s vendor community. This golf tournament provides the funds for charitable projects and programs that have a positive impact on our communities within the areas of youth, children, education, and health.

The Mathworks half-day JSMC program is held in partnership with San Marcos CISD, and this coming summer's program will be held at San Marcos High School.  The donation will provide program scholarships to more than 40 students.  Students in the multi-level program start with the fundamentals of positive and negative numbers on a number line, and progress to more advanced topics when they return in following summers.  One parent of a student in the program last summer remarked, "I am very appreciative of the fact that there are scholarships offered, because if not for that then I wouldn't be able to send my child.  He really learns and understands the material and he applies what he learns to the school year, and I have seen a huge improvement in his math academics.  Thanks again for such a wonderful program!"

Access to high quality summer academic programs is crucial for young students.  Research from the National Summer Learning Association shows that the academic achievement gap can be as much as 6.5 educational years by the end of 9th grade, with more than half of that gap being attributed to summer learning loss.  This support from the H-E-B Tournament of Champions directly addresses this issue by giving access to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds.  Additional support for the 2014 JSMC also comes from Texas State University, San Marcos CISD, the KDK-Harman Foundation, and the Kodosky Foundation.

The upcoming 2014 JSMC in San Marcos runs June 9 - 20, and includes breakfast, snack, and a lunch for students.  Parents and students may register now for the 2014 JSMC atwww.txstate.edu/mathworks.  For more information, please contact the Mathworks office at Texas State University at 512-245-3439 or at mathworks@txstate.edu
