Audition Requirements

 

Auditions are scheduled on Saturday on campus at the School of Music

Undergraduate trumpet majors must complete the classical trumpet audition.

Audition Repertoire

1. Demonstrate jazz style by performing ONE prepared jazz etude and/or transcribed solo with CD/accompanist. (If you choose to play a transcribed solo, selection must be approved prior to your audition) A jazz piano accompanist and a CD player will be available.

  • Baggage Claim Blues (Pages 8-9, Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia, Kendor Music)
  • You're The Last One (Pages 22-23, Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia, Kendor Music)
2. Scales and Arpeggios - Major and minor.
3. Improvisation:
Students will demonstrate improvisation skills by performing ONE chorus of melody and two improvised choruses. If you would like to play a tune not on the list below, selection must be approved prior to your audition.

Bb Blues or F Blues (Aebersold Volume 54, Tracks 3 or 10)
Summertime (Aebersold Volume 54, Track 5)
Satin Doll (Aebersold Volume 54, Track 8)
There Will Never Be Another You (Aebersold Volume 15, Track 2)

4. Sight Reading.

All Jazz Majors participate each semester in Texas State's extraordinary ensembles.
Ensemble auditions are separately scheduled.
