Audition Requirements

 

Auditions are scheduled on Saturday on campus at the School of Music

 Undergraduate instrumental majors must complete the classical instrumental audition.

Audition Repertoire

1. One prepared etude in the jazz style

Jazz Solo transcriptions may be used. If you choose to play a transcribed solo, selection must be approved prior to your audition. Playing a jazz “head” from the Real Book, or similar “fake book” is not acceptable. This etude should demonstrate the student’s technical proficiency and lyrical/musical ability and so should be medium to advanced in level of difficulty. A jazz piano accompanist and a CD player will be available.  

 

2. Scales and Arpeggios - Major and minor.
3. Improvisation - Students will be responsible for the requirements listed below. Tracks will be provided at the audition.

1.) Blues in F or Bb: Aebersold Volume 54, Tracks 3 or 10
play one chorus of melody
improvise a minimum of two (2) choruses of Blues.
Tunes should be selected from the following

play one chorus of melody
improvise a minimum of two (2) choruses

4. Please be prepared to sight-read.

All Jazz Majors participate each semester in Texas State's extraordinary ensembles.
Ensemble auditions are separately scheduled.
