Dunn Scholarship

Application Instructions

1) The amount of the annual scholarship can vary, but will normally be in the range of $200-1000 per year.

2) Students who are eligible:
  • incoming freshmen, transfers, graduate students who have been accepted for admission to Texas State or current freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students
    • incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class
    • incoming graduate students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
    • transfer students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA
    • current Texas State freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA
  • majors in International Studies or History

3) The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit and need. 
  • Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, ACT or SAT scores, or other appropriate measures.  As a guide for determining merit, the following minimum criteria will normally be adhered to:  ACT Composite score of 27, a Texas State score of 1150, and a GPA average of 3.5.
  • Need will be determined by the Texas State Financial Aid Office, which will inform the Committee of an applicant’s financial need status.  A student who does not apply for financial aid will be assumed to be applying solely on the basis of merit.
  • Scholarships can be awarded solely on grounds of merit if there are not sufficient students applying who have both merit and need.

4) Dunn Scholarship recipients are expected to enroll for at least 15 hours per semester if they are undergraduates and at least 9 hours if they are graduate students.

5) Dunn Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State grade point average of 3.5 or above.  Failure to comply with their provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the Dunn Scholarship.

6) Students must reapply for the scholarship every year and must remain a major in international studies or history.

7) Steps to be taken:
  • Applicants should make a normal application for scholarships and admission to Texas State and notify the Department of History and the University Scholarship Coordinator that they wish to be considered for the Dunn Scholarship.
  • Applicants will complete the special Dennis and Margaret Dunn Scholarship Application form and include official transcripts of all college work attempted; incoming freshmen will submit their high school transcript
  • Students who qualify for financial need should fill out a financial need application at the Texas State Financial Aid office.
  • Students should include a list of references with their Dunn Scholarship application and ask the references to send in their letters, on the forms provided, directly to the Chair of the Department of History no later than February 1st.  Relatives are not considered suitable references. 
  • Applicants should submit with the application a separate two-page essay that describes their career goals.
  • Applicants should mail or deliver the application along with the transcript, essay, and list of references to the Department of History no later than 5 p.m. on February 1st or the first business day after February 1st if that day falls on a weekend or holiday.
8) Interviews with applicants may be conducted on campus shortly after February 1 Announcements of those appointed will be made about March 1.
