Graduate Scholarships

The Center for International Studies is excited to announce two new scholarships that are specifically designed to support graduate student research:  The Gunnarson Scholars Grant and the Board Research Scholarship.  Please see the attached applications and guidelines for more details.

Graduate and Undergraduate Scholarships

 

The Center for International Studies offers a variety of scholarships to eligible undergraduate and graduate majors in International Studies. The amount of the scholarship awards vary, but are normally in the range of $200 to $1000 per year. Unless otherwise stated, the application deadline for scholarships for the following award year is February 1st. Eligibility requirements and application materials for each scholarship are listed below.
 
Please submit only one set of scholarship application materials to be considered for the International Studies Scholarships. Other requirements are listed within the text of each scholarship description.

Misinformation or misrepresentation will be sufficient reason for cancellation of an awarded scholarship.

 

Aaron and Meg Dunn Thorburn Family Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class
  • Incoming graduate students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
  • Incoming transfer students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA
  • Current Texas State freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, must have a minimum 3.25 GPA, and current graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA
  • Must be a major in International Studies
  • Undergraduate and graduate-level Thorburn Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours and 9 hours per semester, respectively.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit and need. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above. Need will be determined by income, Pell Grant application, or other appropriate measures such as Financial Aid Award information. Please note in your letter of application that you are a Pell Grant recipient, or that you are eligible for a Pell Grant even though you did not apply, and the income level (personal, family, or household) that supports or will support your studies.
  • Thorburn Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.25 or above for undergraduate students and 3.5 for graduate students. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

 

Barbara & Darrell Piersol and Margaret & Dennis Dunn Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class
  • Incoming graduate students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
  •  Incoming transfer students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA
  • Current Texas State undergraduate graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA
  • Must be a major in International Studies
  • Undergraduate and graduate-level Piersol-Dunn Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours and 9 hours per semester, respectively.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Piersol-Dunn Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.25 or above if undergraduates and 3.5 if graduates. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.
     

 

Board of Advisors Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Currently be enrolled as a full-time student and working on completing his or her major in International Studies. (Students coded as “pre-international studies” are ineligible)
  • Have a Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above; if an incoming graduate student, must have minimum 3.5 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
  • Undergraduate and graduate-level BOA Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours and 9 hours per semester, respectively.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Board of Advisors Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.
     

 

Carol Whitcraft Fredericks Excellence Fund

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Currently be enrolled as a full-time student and working on completing his or her major in International Studies. (Students coded as “Exploratory-International majors” are ineligible)
  • Have a Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above; if an incoming graduate student, must have minimum 3.5 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
  • Undergraduate and graduate-level Sholars must enroll for at least 15 hours and 9 hours per semester, respectively.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • The Carol Fredericks Excellence Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.5 or above. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

 


 

Crown Scholarship

The Crown Scholarship is funded through the generosity of W. Ross and Martha King. It is intended for students who wish to major in International Studies or in any degree in the McCoy College of Business and who aspire to a career in the international arena.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Must be majors in International Studies or the College of Business
  • May be incoming or current undergraduate or graduate students
  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class.
  • Incoming graduate students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
    Transfer students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Current Texas State undergraduate and graduate students must have a 3.2 GPA
  • Must be fluent in a second language
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships is merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Undergraduates must enroll for at least 12 hours and graduate students must enroll for at least 6 hours each semester to hold a Crown Scholarship. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.
     

 

Dennis and Margaret Dunn Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must be majoring in History or International Studies
  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class
  • Current Texas State undergraduate students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA, and current graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA
  • Dunn Scholars are required to maintain and overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.5. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

Dennie Lee Burden Family Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class
  • Incoming graduate students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
  •  Incoming transfer students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA
  • Current Texas State undergraduate students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA, and current graduate students must have a 3.5 GPA
  • Must be a major in International Studies
  • Undergraduate and graduate-level Burden Family Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours and 9 hours per semester, respectively.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit and need. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above. Need will be determined by income, Pell Grant application, or other appropriate measures such as Financial Aid Award information. Ronald and Colette Johnson Foreign Affairs Scholarship

Eligibility criteria:

  • Incoming freshmen must have a minimum ACT Composite score of 27 or an SAT score of 1150, or be in the top 10% of his/her graduating class
  • Incoming graduate students must have a minimum 3.25 GPA on all previous undergraduate work
  • Incoming transfer students must have a minimum 3.25 GPA
  • Current Texas State undergraduate and graduate students must have a minimum 3.25 GPA
  • Must be a major in International Studies
  • Undergraduate and graduate-level Johnson Scholars must enroll for at least 15 hours and 9 hours per semester, respectively.
  • The basic criteria for awarding scholarships will be merit. Merit will be determined by GPA, letters of reference, or other appropriate measures as specified in the eligibility criteria above.
  • Johnson Scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State GPA of 3.25 or above if undergraduates and 3.5 if graduates. Failure to comply with this provision shall constitute grounds for the forfeiture of the scholarship.

 


                                                             Helen Ratliff Cleaves Memorial Scholarship

 

The Helen Ratliff Cleaves Memorial Scholarship is a competitive scholarship offered through the Center for International Studies at Texas State University-San Marcos. This unique scholarship program focuses on Latin America and entails work and study in Honduras during one summer, including teaching ESL at the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán in Tegucigalpa, or at another selected educational institution in Honduras. The scholarship provides fnding for tuition and fees, educational supplies, room and board, and a small stipend.  

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to graduate students in International Studies
  • Fluency in English and Spanish
  • Eligibility to be accepted as a graduate student at Texas State University
  • Students must be enrolled for a minimum of nine hours during the semesters in which they receive the scholarship
  • A minimum of a 3.25 GPA is required




Wilson International Exchange Scholarship


The Wilson International Exchange Scholarship is a competitive scholarship offered through the Center for International Studies at Texas State University-San Marcos. The Unique program supports a Cambodian faculty/student exchange as well as collaborative research and international outreach to achieve cooperation, understanding, a spirit of inclusiveness, respect for diverse cultures and people, and the development of awareness of global interdependency among citizens.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Open to graduate students from all disciplines
  • Fluency in English and other language, preferably Khmer or French
  • Familiarity with American and Cambodian culture and educational systems
  • Eligibility to be accepted as a graduate student at Texas State University
  • Students must be enrolled for a minimum of nine hours during the semesters in which they receive the scholarship
  • A minimum of a 3.25 GPA is required
