Panelists: Dr. Margarita M. Arellano, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, Dr. Gloria Martinez, Dr. Martha Ovando
Session Description: This panel will consist of three Latinas in leadership at institutions of higher learning in Texas. They will share their personal stories of challenges and opportunities along their professional and personal journeys in higher education.
10:30 A.M | Session II: "Mujeres Valientes!: A Brief History of Chicana/Latina Revolucionarias, Activistas, y Lideres Who Mobilized, Organizers who Resisted and Advocated for Self-Determination and Community Empowerment"
Presenter: Dr. Gloria P. Martinez, Professor of Sociology
Session Description: This presentation will briefly describe the various roles of Chicana/Latina as soldaderas, activistas and community organizers to resist oppression and affirm their identities for opportunity, self-expression, self-determination, and liberation in society. I will share sources and actions of Chicana/Latina empowerment.

1:30 PM | LBJSC 3-14.1 | Keynote: “Finding Our Voices: Latinas in Leadership”
Presenter: Dr. Edna Aguirre Rehbein, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs
Session Description: The Latina perspective is vital in today’s diverse and changing leadership arena. Young Latinas need to learn to share their ideas and points of view in strong and impactful ways in order to be taken seriously and to speak for those who cannot have their voices heard.
2:30 P.M | Session III: Latinx: The Spectrum of Male Identity Presenter: Mr. Jesse Silva, Assistant Director
Session Description: The goal of this presentation is to explore the range, depth and complexities of the Latinx masculinity and male identity. Participants will gain awareness of how societal constructs of masculinity inform and shape their understanding, engagement and interaction with/as Latinx males.
3:30 P.M | Session IV: “The Cardiovascular Health of Women”
Presenter: Dr. Viola G. Benavente, RN; Assistant Professor, St. David’s School of Nursing, College of Health Professions
Session Description: The goal of this presentation to disseminate knowledge and increase awareness of cardiovascular disease in women, in terms of disease prevention and risk reduction. The participant will be able to: (1) identify major risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, (2) recognize the warning signs of a heart attack, and (3) describe effective strategies to promote heart-healthy lifestyles.
