Unity, Separation, and Cycles

Monks at gallery reception

Throughout time, the wrold has experienced continous cycles of birth, death, and rebirth - physically in the rotation of seasons and reproduction, politically in the rise and fall of nations, and metaphorically in the spiritual beliefs and emotional vicissitudes that guide many human lives. In support of the 2012-2013 Common Experience theme, the Gallery of the Common Experience offers this exhibition as a presentation of global polarities and unities: the meditative symmetry and symbolism of mandalas; the wheel of human experience in the 2011 documentary film Samsara; the downward force of World War II propaganda; and the upward force of recent popular protests.

At the opening of the gallery, the Honors College welcomed the monks of Drepung Loseling monastery in Tibet
