The Beehive Design Collective Reception

Who & What: The Beehive Design Collective is a wholly volunteer enterprise to increase awareness regarding environmental degradation through illustrations.  A reception was held for the Beehive and provided this group the opportunity to discuss their latest campaign, The True Cost of Coal. The Beehive visited Appalachia to hear the stories and concerns from residents there regarding mountaintop removal. The Beehive created a poster, which took two years to complete and is an engrossing portrayal of the natural history of Appalachia, the industrialization process in the region, the backlash against pollution and unsafe-working conditions for miners, and the future revitalization of the communities and ecosystems.

The reception was a participatory and interactive one where attendees were given portions of the giant coal poster to uncover the stories behind the graphics. The knowledgeable and passionate Beehive then gave a detailed-narrative regarding the epic illustration and took questions over the provided food. It was quite an inspirational treat for attendees to be swarmed by the Beehive and we hope they'll come by again on their next tour of the US.
