Undergraduate Research Conference (URC)


Sixth Annual Fall 2011 Undergraduate Research Conference

The sixth annual URC was held Thursday and Friday, December 1-2, in the Lyndon B. Johnson Student Center, rooms 3-9.1 and 3-14.1.

The keynote speaker for the 2011 URC was be Dr. Bob McLean from Texas State University's Department of Biology. His keynote address is titled "Investigating Adherent Bacteria on Earth and in Space".

2011 URC


Fifth Annual URC 2010

The URC 2010 was held Thursday and Friday, December 2-3, 2010, in the Lyndon B. Johnson Student Center, rooms 3-9.1 and 3-14.1. 
 
The keynote speaker for the 2010 URC was Professor Jason Reed from Texas State University's Department of Photography. His keynote address was titled "Borderland Collective: Research to Create Change".
 
Professor Jason Reed, director of the social art project Borderland Collective, used his personal work as a model of research that has a basis in personal passion, high ideals, necessary utility, and social sustainability. With the desire to create social and cultural change through his research Professor Reed founded Borderland Collective in 2008. Using diverse creative mediums such as photography and creative writing, Reed and his colleagues facilitate collaborative storytelling between artists, teachers, youth and families living in the US/Mexico borderland region, exhibit and publish the results of their collaborations, and preserve the work in an archive that puts forward an alternative history of our time driven by everyday voicesn alternative history of our time driven by everyday voices.

Mission Statement

Each year, the Office of the Associate Vice President for Research and the Honors College sponsor an Undergraduate Research Conference.  The event is held to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students across the different colleges and disciplines to share their endeavors with the academic and University communities.

Honors theses, research (in any phase of completion), creative works, and course projects are all welcome for submission to the Conference.  In the spirit of academic curiosity and discovery, the major aim of the event is to showcase and celebrate Texas State undergraduate student work.

The Conference also strives to serve as a leadership development experience for students as they move forward in their on their academic journeys and in their career paths.  Presentation, interpersonal communication, and public speaking skills are a few areas enhanced by Conference participation.  

Presentations

Two types of presentations are accepted for URC:

  • Oral Presentation
  • Poster Presentation

The oral presentations may be from any of the following categories:

  • Honors Thesis
  • Completed Research Project
  • Work-In-Progress
  • Proposed Research
  • Creative Project
  • Course Project

 

Prizes will be awarded for the top two poster presentations selected by a panel of judges:

First Prize: $250

Second Prize: $150

Also, outstanding student posters will be chosen to represent our university at the Texas Undergraduate Research Day at the State Capitol on February 14, 2011.
