Thesis

The Benefits of Writing a Thesis

The honors thesis presents both a great challenge and a great opportunity. The preparation for a thesis, including both research and writing, can help focus your interests, provide perspective on your major, develop scholarly skills, and encourage creativity and independent effort.

Writing the thesis can also prove a benefit when applying to graduate or professional school, or applying to a job after graduation. Admissions committees in many of the best graduate and professional schools often consider students especially well qualified who have already participated successfully in the original research represented by an honors thesis.

The Thesis Process

Students must fulfill the following steps to begin a thesis:

  1. Find a topic that you are passionate about, and would like to pursue.
  2. Find a supervisor and/or second reader. Meet with your advisor and have him or her sign the thesis application
  3. Schedule a meeting with the Dean of the Honors College, Dr. Heather Galloway to get approval for your proposed thesis topic. Be sure to bring the signed thesis application form to this meeting. Please  e-mail honors@txstate.edu to request an appointment.
  4. Enroll in the thesis course on BANNER.
