For more than 40 years, students in the Honors College have benefited from interdisciplinary classes in subjects that bring students and faculty together from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The college offers small, seminar-type classes in which faculty members provide an atmosphere that promotes curiosity, creativity and a respect for learning.
Founded originally as the University Honors Program, the program has grown and evolved. From spring 2004 through spring 2008, a gift from the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation of Austin created an endowment and the name was changed to Mitte Honors Program for that period. Since then, numerous scholarships and funds have been created to offer support to honors students, such as the Stephen R. Gregg and Merry Kone Fitzpatrick scholarships. In Fall 2011, in recognition for the increase in the size and scope, the unit was elevated to an Honors College.
