Scholarships

The History Department has several scholarships which are granted annually based upon the availability of funds. Students should apply by downloading and submitting a completed application to the Departmental Office (TMH 202) by the following deadlines:

Upper-level Presidential Scholarship: February 15 (or the next working day if February 15 falls on a weekend.)

All other undergraduate and graduate scholarships: March 10 (or the next working day if March 10 falls on a weekend.)

Undergraduate

ALTON G. BRIEGER SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be history majors, who have completed at least 30 hours of Texas State University credit.
2. Applicants must have completed one of the following - History 2310, 2311, 2312, 2320, or an advanced history course at Texas State University.
3. Applicants must have a 3.3 GPA in history, and a 3.0 GPA overall.
4. Applicants must obtain two confidential letters of recommendation from college professors with one being from a faculty member at Texas State whose class you have completed.
5. Applicants must submit a 400-500 word essay as described in the application guidelines. 

Brieger scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.3 in history. Scholars must register for and complete at least 12 hours per semester. Failure to comply will constitute grounds for forfeiture of the Brieger Scholarship.

DENNIS AND MARGARET DUNN SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be current students majoring in history or international studies with a minimum 3.5 GPA or incoming freshmen with a minimum ACT composite of 27 or SAT of 1150 and rank in the top 10 percent of his or her graduating class.
2. Dunn scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State University GPA of 3.5 or above.

FITZPATRICK-CLAYTON-KISSLER SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. This scholarship has the following two preferences:

A. Students who are seeking teacher certification in history or
B. graduate students who already have their teacher certification but who are continuing their education.

2. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA overall and a minimum 3.5 GPA in history.
3. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation. Students should choose references who can describe the applicant's academic or teaching abilities.

TAYLOR-MURPHY SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be history majors, who have completed at least 30 hours of Texas State University credit.
2. Applicants must have completed one of the following: History 2310, 2311, 2312, 2320, or an advanced history course at Texas State University.
3. Applicants must have a 3.3 GPA in history, and a 3.0 GPA overall.
4. Applicants must obtain two confidential letters of recommendation from college professors with one being from a faculty member at Texas State whose class you have completed.

Taylor-Murphy scholars are required to maintain an overall, and semester-by-semester, GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.3 in history. Scholars must also register for and complete at least 12 hours per semester. Failure to comply will constitute grounds for forfeiture of the Taylor-Murphy Scholarship.

PRESIDENTIAL UPPER-LEVEL SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Applicants must have earned 60 or more credits by the time the scholarship is funded (in the fall term).
2. 30 of the 60 credits must have been earned at Texas State University .
3. Students receiving other scholarships funded by student service fees are ineligible for Presidential Upper-Level Scholarships unless they elect to forfeit the other(s) for that year.
4. Applicants must request three faculty members, preferably from their major department, to fill out confidential evaluation forms.

NOTE:  The Presidential Upper-Level Scholarship differs from the others listed above. The History Department will choose one nominee whose name and file will be sent to the College of Liberal Arts. The college will consider all the nominations from various departments, and will award one scholarship of $1,200 divided into $600 at fall and spring registrations.

RFSA Scholarship
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Recipient(s) should be enrolled at Texas State University for a minimum of 12 hours per semester for undergraduate students and a minimum of 6 hours per semester for graduate students.
2. Recipients must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 for freshmen, 3.25 for continuing and transfer students, and 3.5 for graduate students.
3. Entering freshmen must be in the top 25 percent quartile of their graduating class.
4. Consideration will be given to students with a financial need as documented through the Texas State Financial Aid and Scholarship Office.
5. Consideration will be given for documented leadership, extra-curricular activities and community service.

Preference will be given to a family member of a faculty or staff retiree of Texas State University, although all applicants will be considered. Application must be submitted to August 1.

GRADUATE

BRUNSON FAMILY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be current graduate students majoring in history with a minimum 3.5 GPA.
2. Applicants must submit 2 letters of recommendations from history professors.
3. Applicants must submit a 250 to 500 word essay describing how their experience in the history department has affected their view of the discipline.
4. Brunson scholars are required to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester Texas State University GPA of 3.5 or above.

JAMES W. POHL GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be returning graduate students working on a thesis in History.
2. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA.
3. Applicants must submit two letters of support/recommendation – one from the director of the thesis and one from another faculty member.
4. Applicants must submit a detailed thesis prospectus with their application.

MICHAEL R. DAVIS SCHOLARSHIP
Eligibility and Application Requirements

1. Applicants must be current graduate students with a minimum 3.5 GPA.
2. Applicants must be History majors, or Music majors who are currently studying Texas Music History.
3. Preference in the granting of this scholarship will be given to students who are studying Texas Music History.
4. Applicants must provide two letters of recommendation from faculty members.
5. Applicants will be required to submit a 250-500 word essay describing how the History courses they have taken so far have impacted their understanding of the long-term development of our society.
6. Davis Scholars will be required to enroll in at least 6 semester hours and to maintain an overall and semester-by-semester GPA of 3.5 or higher. Failure to comply will constitute grounds for forfeiture of the Michael R. Davis Scholarship.

RFSA Scholarship
