Historic Guidebook Series

Students in the History Practicum course, offered under the direction of Drs. Gene Bourgeois and Frank de la Teja, have an opportunity to learn all facets of planning, researching, writing, editing, designing, publishing, and marketing guidebooks on selected historic places. The final products of the course, the guidebooks listed below, are then sold to the public to raise funds for History Department scholarships and projects.



San Marcos: A Guide to a Historic Texas Town (1996). A thirty-eight page booklet containing a centerfold map to area historic sites. Richly illustrated in black & white photographs and historical illustrations, San Marcos tells the story of one of the oldest settlement sites in Texas, since pre-historic Indians inhabited the springs thousands of years ago. Located on a major natural thoroughfare, the San Marcos area contains sites dating from the Spanish colonial, Texas Republic, and early Statehood eras.

Lockhart & Luling: A Guide to Historic Caldwell County (1998). This forty-eight page book traces the evolution of one of the most historically significant central Texas counties through the stories of its two most important towns. Cotton, Cattle, and Oil, have been important factors in the county's life, and this handsome booklet, profusely illustrated in color and black & white photographs and containing helpful maps, will guide you through a driving tour of the entire county.

San Antonio Missions: A Historical Guide to the Missions of San Antonio (2001). Historic San Antonio contains some of the most distinctive and popular sites in the United States. The Alamo and its sister missions, strung along the San Antonio River, tell stories of Indian peoples, Spanish friars, Texian revolutionary heroes, and determined preservationists. This sixty-four page, color-illustrated book, tells the story of the area as a whole and each individual missions, accompanied by maps that will help you get around the city and each mission site.

Fredericksburg: Guidebook to the Historic German Hill Country , is a sixty-four page booklet profusely illustrated with color photographs and historical images.
