The Department of History at Texas State University-San Marcos offers a Bachelor of Arts in History (with the option of teacher certification). As a liberal arts discipline, the department is dedicated to developing analytical skills and promoting critical thinking. Students are encouraged to reflect not simply on their career goals, but also on what type of persons they want to become.
Bachelor of Arts in History—33 Hours
History 1310 and 1320: History of the United States
History 2310: Western Civilization to 1715
or History 2311: World Civilization to the 17th Century
History 2320: Western Civilization since 1715
or History 2312: World Civilization from the 17 Century
18 hours of advanced History courses (3000-4000 level)
Students are required to complete at least one course from Group A (World History), one course from Group B (European History), and one course from Group C (U.S. History). The remaining 9 hours of History may be selected from group A, B, or C, but no more than three courses may be taken from any one group.

History 2311 and 2312: World Civilization
18 hours of advanced History courses (3000-4000 level)
Students are required to complete at least one course from Group A (World History), one course from Group B (European History), and three courses from Group C (U.S. History). The remaining 3 hours of History may be selected from either group A or B.

Bachelor of Arts in History with Social Science Composite Teacher Certification-30 Hours
History 1310 and 1320: History of the United States
History 2311 and 2312: World Civilization
15 hours of advanced History courses (3000-4000 level)
Students are required to complete at least one course from Group A (World History), one course from Group B (European History), and two courses from Group C (U.S. History). The remaining 3 hours of History may be selected from either group A or B.
History 4300: Social Studies Resources and Practice
Requirements for a Minor in History :
3 hours: HIST 1310
3 hours: HIST 1320
3 hours: HIST 2310 or 2311
3 hours: HIST 2312 or 2320
12 hours of advanced courses [3000 or 4000 level], consisting of :
- 3 hours of advanced history coursework from Group A (World History) and
- 3 hours of advanced history coursework from Group B (European History) and
- 3 hours of advanced coursework from Group C (U.S. History) and
- 3 advanced elective hours from any group.
