Development Leaves

 Deadline for Submitting Proposals

Fall Or Spring Term

October 15

The Texas Legislature has established a program of Faculty Development Leaves “. . to improve further the higher education available . . at the state-supported colleges and universities . .”   This program is

“. . part of the plan of compensation for those colleges and universities." The deadline for receipt of applications by the chair of the Faculty Senate is usually October 15 of the year prior to the leave. Other specific deadlines for prior receipt of applications by department chairs/school directors and deans are published in the notice of application deadlines and available on the Provost’s website at http://www.txstate.edu/academicaffairs/calendars.html .

Applicants must submit a completed application (Attachment A) to the chair of the department/director of the school. When the chair/director has verified the applicant's eligibility and has provided the requested information, the applicant will forward the application for comments and signature to the Dean. The applicant will then forward the application and fifteen copies to the Faculty Senate.

Requests for Faculty Development Leaves are initially reviewed by the Faculty Senate, which submits its recommendation in rank order to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Senate shall act on the applications and forward them to the Provost no later than five weeks after the application deadline.

Pending available funding, five Supplemental Grant Awards have been established for $20,000 each for faculty who receive Faculty Development Leaves.  These grants are to assist faculty in their research efforts and can be used to fund travel and lodging costs associated with research expenses during the Faculty Development Leave, to purchase equipment or materials needed for research during the Faculty Development Leave, and as a salary supplement for those who select both the fall and spring semesters for a Faculty Development Leave. The Supplemental Grant Award ($20,000) will be combined with other funds from the Provost Office to provide up to 100% of salary for an academic-year leave.

A committee appointed by the Provost with representation from the Faculty Senate will review all requests for these awards from faculty who have been approved by the President for Faculty Development Leaves.  This committee will recommend five award recipients to the Provost, who will make the final decisions.  Award notifications will be made by January 15th of the year prior to the leave.

Faculty requesting the supplemental grant award must complete Attachment B.
