ALCOHOL OR TOBACCO
SPONSORSHIPS THAT ARE ALLOWED UNDER THIS UPPS:
1. A beer or
tobacco sponsor (Miller, Budweiser, Corona, Marlboro, etc.) could serve as a
co-sponsor of a student activity like Cancer Bowl, KenDucky Derby, a volleyball
tournament, etc., as long as a non-university co-sponsor that is not affiliated
with alcohol or marketing is also used (e.g., Kinko's, Nike, HEB, etc.).
2. As long as a co-sponsored activity or event is taking place, promotional items like key chains, T-shirts, Frisbees, cups, etc. bearing the alcohol or tobacco company's name or logo may be either handed out or sold to people attending or participating in the event.
3. Flyers,
banners, posters, newspaper ads, etc., and other printed media advertising the
co-sponsored activity or event can identify the name and logo of the alcohol or
tobacco company sponsoring the event, but they are limited to one-fourth of the
visible viewing area. Therefore, three-fourths of the flyer, poster, newspaper
ad, banner, etc., must focus on the event or be neutral (blank space).
4. A
moderation message (e. g., "Don't Drink and Drive," "Smoking is
Hazardous to Your Health," etc.) must accompany all advertisements that
include alcohol or tobacco sponsors.
ACTIVITIES THAT ARE NOT
PERMISSIBLE UNDER THIS UPPS:
1. Student
organizations may not sell alcohol- or tobacco-related paraphernalia as a sole
fundraising activity on campus.
2. Beer companies (Miller, Budweiser, Corona, etc.) may not offer beer as a prize or gift to the winners or participants in a co-sponsored activity. For example, kegs of beer may not be given to the winning team in a volleyball tournament.
3. Drinking
contests are not allowed as part of any co-sponsored activity.
4. The alcohol
or tobacco marketing company (Miller, Budweiser, Corona, Marlboro) may not base
its financial support on the amount of its product purchased or consumed by
individuals or groups prior to or during the co-sponsored activity or event.
