Dr. Karen Backor, an August graduate of Texas State’s Ph.D. program in School Improvement, was recently honored by the Council of Professors of Instructional Supervision (COPIS) as a Blumberg Scholar, an award given to doctoral students or recent graduates for outstanding research. Dr. Backor’s award was based on her Ph.D. dissertation research on how university principal preparation programs can prepare aspiring principals to be instructional leaders.
In her research, Dr. Backor interviewed professors of supervision, principals, and teacher leaders identified by an expert panel as outstanding instructional leaders, and created a model for principal preparation based on those interviews. Dr. Backor received the award at the opening session of the council’s annual conference, held this year at Penn State University, and presented her research to conference participants the following day. Dr. Backor currently is assistant professor of education and director of field experiences at Schreiner University.
Dr. Jovita Ross-Gordon was awarded the 2013 Career Achievement Award from the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education’s Commission of Professors of Adult Education. She was presented this national award Thursday, November 7th at the annual meeting in Lexington, KY.
Spanning 28 years in academic research positions in the field of Adult Education since earning her doctorate from the University of Georgia in 1985, Dr. Ross-Gordon’s research in the field of adult education has significantly and positively impacted how we understand adult learners with disabilities, diversity and equity in adult education, and adult learners in higher education. With the social imperative of effective ability- and culturally-sensitive adult education, the reskilling of the world’s workers, lifelong learning initiatives, and more adults in higher education than ever before, it is at the intersection of her research strands where we find the current and future trajectory of Dr. Ross-Gordon’s impact on our field. Her body of work distinctly impacts and supports the field of adult education and stands out among scholarly educational research areas in meeting the needs of adult learners, educators, educational programs and organizations, and the workplace.
Adult Education Quarterly (AEQ) is a quarterly scholarly refereed journal committed to advancing the understanding and practice of adult and continuing education. AEQ aims to stimulate a problem-oriented, critical approach to research and practice, with an increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary and international perspectives. Innovative and provocative scholarship informed by diverse orientations and methodologies is encouraged.
APCE graduate and associate professor of clinical laboratory science at Texas State is the lead story on Elsevier Connect in late October 2013. The topic, "10 Tips to Finishing Your PhD Faster" is useful and important for all doctoral students. In his article he writes: "Recently, I came across a very interesting article here by Andy Greenspon, a PhD student in applied physics at Harvard: "9 things you should consider before embarking on a PhD". I thought Andy gave some fantastic advice, and it reminded me of a promise I made to myself while working on my PhD. In the wee hours of the night poring over coursework, informed consent documents, data analysis, and the umpteenth version of my dissertation, I vowed that if I ever finished my PhD, I would try to help others through the quicksand of a graduate school journey."
Wendy Francik, a spring graduate of the APCE Program, received the prestigious Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award for 2013 at the Adult Education Research Conference for her dissertation research, THE NATURE OF SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING AND TRANSFORMATIONAL LEARNING IN SELF-MANAGING BIPOLAR DISORDER TO STAY WELL. This prestigious award is made annually to a single graduate student selected at the Adult Education Research Conference, the premier research conference in the field of Adult Education held in the U.S. Participants and papers selected for the conference come from around the world. Notably, Wendy completed her studies at Texas State as a part-time doctoral student while maintaining demanding positions in a state agency.
School Improvement doctoral students participated in a Writer’s Retreat facilitated by faculty at the Balcones Springs Conference Center in Marble Falls from April 11-14. The retreat began Thursday evening and continued through Sunday morning, involving students who are working on the dissertation process. The goal of the retreat was to provide a collegial environment conducive to intensive dissertation writing, faculty mentoring, and peer support.
Congratulations to Chaitra McGrew
Chaitra McGrew (School Improvement, Cohort 11) has been named a Public School Research Scholar by the CREATE Consortium (Center for Research, Evaluation, and Advancement of Teacher Education). The Public School Research Scholars program involves seminars and funding intended to support the doctoral research projects of public school professionals working in areas related to educational quality and effectiveness. CREATE is a consortium of universities in the Texas A&M, Texas State, University of Texas, and University of Houston systems and an additional 23 public and private Texas universities. Chaitra is one of 8 doctoral students selected from amongst these universities, based on the quality of her proposed dissertation project.
Congratulations to Dr. Coryell
Dr. Joellen Coryell was presented with the 2012 Early Career Award from the Commission of Professors of Adult Education at the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education Conference. Dr. Coryell is an assistant professor in the APCE Program. Dr. Coryell was recently named as one of the Top 25 Texas Education Professors by Online Schools in Texas.
