Windows 95-based HTML Editors
I have included CoffeeCup HTML Editor++ 98 from CoffeCup Software on the CD. I think this is a great shareware Web site creation tool. However, there are as many ways to work as there are people, and I realize that the things I love about CoffeeCup HTML Editor++ 98 may not be everything you want or need in a Web document production system. For those of you who found CoffeeCup HTML Editor++ 98 wanting, here's a list of some other popular editors.
Commercial Editors
- HomeSite 4.0
- Version 1 of Homesite was a popular freeware editor. Going commercial under Allaire has only made it better. Includes support for JavaScript and style sheets.
- HoTMetaL Pro
- One of the first commercially supported HTML editors. From SoftQuad Inc., mail@sq.com
- PageMill
- A nice WYSIWYG editor from Adobe. Free demo version (can't save) is available for download.
- FrontPage
- A commercial web publishing system from Microsoft. In addition to standard editor features, it can automatically transfer files to a server. To use all of its features, you will need to have access to a server that supports its custom extensions. Check with your ISP (or find one that has them) to make sure that they have the extensions before you invest time in developing a site with FrontPage.
- Macromedia's Dreamweaver
- WYSIWYG, validates, spell checker, remote site management.
Shareware Editors
These shareware editors are available for download over the Internet. They feature a trial period after which you must stop using the software or pay a registration fee.
- WebEdit Pro
- A shareware editor by Kenn Nesbitt. Features include HTML validation (supports HTML 1, 2, Netscape 1.x, Netscape 2.0, Internet Explorer 1.0 and Internet Explorer 2.0), ability to open documents for editing directly from the web, automatic upload of documents to your web site via ftp, WYSIWYG Frame Wizard, WYSIWYG Form Builder, link validation wizard, automatic generation of a table of contents for any standard HTML document, a multimedia Wizard for adding multimedia features (including audio, video, JavaScript, and animation). A standard version with a smaller feature set is also available.
- Web Media Publisher
- Features include support for HTML 3.2, Netscape extensions, and MSIE extensions, spell checker, FTP file upload, image preview, built-in web browser, WYSIWYG table builder, automatic frame builder, Java and Shockwave support, user definable toolbars, multiple file search and replace, WYSIWYG background and text color selection, and more.
