By Sue Breland

Texas State University’s William P. Hobby Center for Public Service graduated forty-three new Texas Certified Public Managers at the Texas State Capitol on Monday December 14, 2015. The CPM graduates and their families came from CPM Programs at the following locations: Arlington, Galveston, Houston, Edinburg and Nacogdoches, Round Rock, San Antonio, San Marcos Texas. The graduates participated in CPM Programs offered by the following universities, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, the University of Houston and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Unfortunately, the CPM graduation speaker, United States Representative, Rubén E. Hinojosa, representing the 15th congressional district of Texas, was unable to attend. His work in Washington DC and important votes called on this day kept him from traveling back to Texas for the event. He sent his regrets along with the written speech he was planning to give, sharing some of his experiences as a public servant (read his comments here). Congressman Hinojosa offered his highest praise and congratulations to the graduates.

Additionally, the CPM European Pilot Program produced the first graduate from Brazov, Romania, Ms. Cristina Mita. After earning a Bachelor degree in Sociology and Master’s degree in Image Campaign Management, Cristina became aware of the CPM program while serving as the Managing Editor of the Romanian Review of Local Public Administration where she managed an exchange program between ASPA’s Section for Public Management Practice and the School of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida. Looking to extend her knowledge of non-profit sector work, Cristina currently serves as an Assistant at the HOSPICE Casa Sperantei Foundation, an organization offering free palliative care services for adults with cancer and children with life-limiting diseases. She says she recognized the potential and importance of non-profit organizations while visiting the US and it was a “revelation.”

Planning to ultimately pursue a public service career, Cristina says, “The CPM program was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the public sector and management. I have already started to use the knowledge I have gained, but I hope to use it by moving on to the public sector. Until then, I can honestly say that the Program has changed my approach to work and development, giving me more freedom of thought and opening my horizons.”

Congratulations Cristina, and to all December 2015 Certified Public Manager graduates!
