SDL promotes higher education

By Lesley Ornales

On November 15, 2006 the Sigma Delta Lambda Sorority hosted its 5th annual Promoting Higher Education Youth Summit in the LBJ Student Center on the Texas State University-San Marcos campus.
The summit is held every year to help promote higher education to the youth of the San Marcos community and the surrounding areas.
The sorority’s emphasis lies in promoting high education which is why they created the summit in order to expose the youth to opportunities in high education.
The summit includes an entire day at Texas State University listening to motivational speakers, receiving financial and admissions counseling, and enjoying entertainment and food.
Glenda Molina, the Youth Summit event coordinator, expressed just how rewarding the summit has been over the past years.
“Sigma Delta Lambda is very pleased to help the at risk children of the San Marcos community and we are happy to be able to motivate them on a personal level and have the opportunity to show them that people with situations just like theirs have gone to college and succeeded.”
This year the summit hosted about 100-150 area students from Seguin High School and San Marcos High School. This year the Sigma Delta Lambda anticipated the summit to increase opportunities for promoting enrollment and diversity within Texas State but overall hoped to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the students in attendance.
