Veterans Resources

Veterans Affairs
The Office of Veterans Affairs assists veterans by answering questions concerning veteran educational benefits, certifying enrollments for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and monitoring our veterans' degree plans and academic progress.

Assessment and Counseling Clinic
The Professional Counseling Program at Texas State works in partnership with Veterans Guiding Veterans. For more information, contact Veterans Guiding Veterans at veteranguide@txstate.edu or call 512.245.6192.

Counseling Center
Counseling Center services include brief individual, group, and couples counseling; consultation and crisis response; and workshops about coping with stress and other mental health topics. Counseling Center services are free, confidential, and provided by trained professionals to currently enrolled Texas State students while classes are in session. Individual counseling is also available on a limited basis at the Round Rock campus.

Project Cohort
Project Cohort was designed by nationally recognized experts in resilience building and recovery to help veterans transition to healthy, purposeful civilian lives. The program creates closely bonded groups of fellow veterans — cohorts — that work together over a significant period of time to provide the support and camaraderie that veterans lose when they leave military service.

Project Healing Waters
Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc.™ is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.

Student Veteran Resources
Since 2009, Texas State University has been recognized as a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs, and Texas State ranks among the best nationally in the "Best For Vets" college survey conducted by Military Times EDGE. Many Texas State programs, departments, and colleges have been designated Veteran Friendly Offices (VFOs), implementing a one-stop philosophy and assistance practice when helping student veterans.

Tutor Corps
Veterans tutoring veterans: The Tutor Corps provides academic services and support to help student veterans succeed on the Texas State campus and beyond. Tutoring is currently available at the Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC) and the Writing Center. SLAC offers veterans assistance for most STEM topics and Spanish. The Writing Center offers specialized tutoring for veterans, graduate students working on theses and dissertations, and via webcam for students unable to get to campus.

Veterans Advisory Council
The Veterans Advisory Council (VAC) provides advice and support for services and programs designed to facilitate the smooth transition of military veteran students to college and to promote veteran student success.

Veterans Alliance of Texas State (VATS)
Veterans Alliance of Texas State (VATS) is a chartered organization whose mission is to provide a connection between student veterans, the university, and the community. The VATS Cave is located in LBJ Student Center, room 4-13.3.

Veterans Guiding Veterans
This program provides incoming and returning Texas State student veterans with guidance to succeed in their academic endeavors. The peer-to-peer program matches new student veterans with an enrolled student veteran who has attended Texas State for at least two semesters and who shares a similar background, including academic goals and interests. Partners offer advice on a range on topics, such as the timely completion of Texas State and veteran-related paperwork, transitioning on campus, and information about the San Marcos community. This program is open to all military veterans and dependents using military education benefits.

Veterans Initiative at Texas State
The Veterans Initiative is a model of transitional, comprehensive, and coordinated services that have been developed in the areas of academic support and orientation, health and behavioral health, career and employment, training and technical assistance.
