The LBJ-MLK Crossroads Project has been organized by a cross-section of the San Marcos community and the Common Experience team to build a monument on the corner of LBJ and MLK Drives commemorating the two men's work. The San Marcos City Council has agreed to approve the transfer of that 1300 square feet of land from the county, thus opening the door for project.
On Monday, January 19, 2009, at 10 a.m., the City of San Marcos will celebrate Martin Luther King's birthday by gathering at the Hays County Court House for a proclamation, speeches, and songs. Those gathered at the courthouse will march to the corner of LBJ and MLK Drives, where a city council member and county commissioner will unveil a sign at the future location of the LBJ-MLK Commemorative Monument.
In addition, at the Texas State MLK celebration on January 22, Councilman Chris Jones will read the
same proclamation at the keynote program as a way to connect the event to campus and the Common Experience.
