Leadership Institute | Campus Canvas

These four canvases (click above) were created by attendees during the Leadership Institute Annual Conference. Campus Canvas is an art intervention in the Quad, where passersby can stop and add whatever they want to large collaborative artworks. In the case of the Leadership Institute Annual Conference, the canvases were set up in "Reflection Rooms," where they were surrounded by images of the Civil Rights Movement, UFW protests, 1940s Japanese-American concentration camps, Pride Parade in San Francisco, and images of other Common Experience creative responses by Texas State students.

Leadership Institute Display

The Common Experience display at the Leadership Institute Annual Conference featured two historic signs reading "Colored Waiting Room" and "White Waiting Room" placed over benches that differed in quality. The display prompted attendees to reflect on the impact of integration and consider what promise democracy holds for them.

The sign beside the display reads:

"We the people;" it is a very eloquent beginning. But when the Constitution of the United States was completed on the seventeenth of September 1787, I was not included in the "We the people." I felt for many years that somehow George Washington and Alexander Hamilton just left me out by mistake.

Exploring Democracy's Promise: From Segregation to Integration

This Common Experience theme explores the trials of segregation and the impact of integration, raising the question of how we internalize change in this 50-year celebration of the desegregation of Texas State. Please take time to reflect on this scene from history and consider what promise democracy holds for you. Throughout the conference you will have a chance to reflect on images from the past and imagine the future.
