Geology Minor Checklist

This checklist is for advising purposes for BGS students only.


Consult your undergraduate catalog or official degree audit for degree requirements.

  • Twelve advanced hours in the minor coursework are required for the BGS.
  • A 2.25 cumulative GPA must be maintained in all minor courses.
  • No grade lower than a “C” will be accepted as credit for BGS minors.
  • Course rotation indications are intended to be used for planning purposes and do not guarantee course availability. "F" indicates "fall," "S" indicates "spring," and "Su" indicates "summer" availability.

Required:

  • _____ GEOL 1410 - Physical Geology (F, S)
  • _____ GEOL 1420 - Historical Geology (F, S) (Prerequisite: GEOL 1410 with a grade of "C" or better)
  • _____ MATH 1317 - Plane Trigonometry (Prerequisite: MATH 1315 with a grade of "C" or better, Accuplacer College Mathematics score of 86 or more, or Compass College Algebra score of 46 or more, or AAF score of 263 or better.)
    • or _____ MATH 2321 - Calculus for Life Sciences I (Prerequisite: MATH 1315 with a grade of "C" or better, ACT Mathematics score of 24 or more, SAT Mathematics score 520 or more, SAT Math Section score of 550 or more, Accuplacer College Mathematics score of 86 or more, or Compass College Algebra score of 46 or more, or AAF score of 263 or better.)
    • or _____ MATH 2417 - Pre-Calculus Mathematics (Prerequisite: MATH 1315 with a grade of "C" or better, ACT Mathematics score of 24 or more, SAT Mathematics score 520 or more, SAT Math Section score of 550 or more, Accuplacer College Mathematics score of 86 or more, or Compass College Algebra score of 46 or more, or AAF score of 263 or better.)
  • _____ GEOL 3450 - Earth Materials (Prerequisite: GEOL 1410; GEOL 1420; and MATH 1317 or MATH 2321 or MATH 2471 with grades of "C" or better)

Choose 4 hours from the following courses:

  • _____ GEOL 3410 - Sedimentation and Stratigraphy (Prerequisite: GEOL 3450 with a grade of “C” or better.)
  • _____ GEOL 3430 - Structural Geology (Prerequisites: GEOL 1420; MATH 1317, MATH 2321, or MATH 2417; all with a grade of "C" or better)

Choose 7-8 hours from the following courses:

  • _____ GEOL 4330A - Introduction to Petroleum Geology (Prerequisite: GEOL 1420, all with a grade of "C" or better. Corequisite: GEOL 4121)
    • & _____ GEOL 4121 - Directed Study (Prerequisite: GEOL 1420, all with a grade of “C” or better and approval of the instructor.)
  • _____ GEOL 4330C - Survey of Economic Mineral Deposits (Prerequisite: GEOL 3450 with a minimum grade of "C" or better.)
    • & _____ GEOL 4121 - Directed Study (Prerequisite: GEOL 1420, all with a grade of “C” or better and approval of the instructor.)
  • _____ GEOL 4330D - Tectonics and Geology of the USA (Prerequisite: GEOL 1420 with a grade of "C" or higher.)
    • & _____ GEOL 4121 - Directed Study (Prerequisite: GEOL 1410 and GEOL 1420, all with a grade of “C” or better and approval of the instructor.)
  • _____ GEOL 3425 - Geomorphology (Prerequisite: GEO 2410 or GEOL 1410 with a grade of “C” or better.)
  • _____ GEO 4325 - Fluvial Processes (Prerequisite: GEO 3425 or GEO 3434 with a grade of “C” or higher.)
  • _____ GEOL 3410 - Sedimentation and Stratigraphy (Prerequisite: GEOL 3450 with a grade of “C” or better)
  • _____ GEOL 3430 - Structural Geology (Prerequisites: GEOL 1420; MATH 1317, MATH 2321, or MATH 2417; all with a grade of "C" or better.)
  • _____ GEOL 4421 (WI) – Hydrogeology (S) (Prerequisites: GEOL 1420, and MATH 1317, or MATH 2321, or MATH 2417, both with grades of “C” or better)
