Student Affairs in Higher Education

Program Distinctiveness

  • Faculty prepares graduate students to address the developmental and learning challenges of future generations of college students.
  • Departmental support, networking and professional development opportunities create a unique learning environment.
  • Classes in the program are taught by a combination of full-time faculty members and professionals who hold prestigious positions at Texas State University. The latter includes vice presidents, assistant vice presidents, deans and directors.
  • Our alumni are employed or have been at various higher education institutions within Texas and across the United Stated, including Trinity University, University of Miami, St. Mary's University, University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Florida Atlantic University, Southern Illinois Universitiy, Tulane University, University of New Orleans, Northern Arizona University, St. Edward's University, Austin Community College, and Texas State University.
  • Students and faculty in the program reflect a rich diversity of background and experiences.
  • The program meets guidelines recommended by the Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education and ACPA's Commission for  Professional Preparation programs.
  • Nearly all students enrolled in the program have some form of financial assistance (graduate research assistantship, fellowship, scholarship).

SAHE Mission

The purpose of the Student Affairs in Higher Education program is to develop well-prepared student affairs practitioners who are able to: provide leadership and facilitate student development in a variety of student affairs roles; work effectively with faculty, students, administrators and other members of the academic community; and apply theory, research, and assessment and evaluation models to student affairs issues, problems, and programs.  Students participate in a dynamic and multi-modal learning setting in which critical thinking, scholarship, introspection, and ethical practice are valued.
