Course Work
A master of education in student affairs in higher education requires 45 credit hours. Check here for the description of courses. Courses are taken in a cohort model and include the following:
 
Foundations (12 hours)
  • SAHE 5390: Higher Education and Student Affairs I: Organization, Administration, and Functions of Student Affairs
  • SAHE 7339: Foundations of Higher Education Administration
  • SAHE 7340:  College Student Development: Theory and Practice
  • COUN 5391: Research Methods
Professional Studies (21 hours)
  • SAHE 5354: Basic Helping Skills
  • SAHE 5311: Working with Adult Groups
  • SAHE 5322: Governance and Legal Issues in Higher Education
  • SAHE 5393: The American College Student
  • SAHE 5323: Program Development and Evaluation
  • SAHE 7335: Higher Education Leadership and Organizational Development
  • SAHE 5392: Higher Education and Student Affairs II: Leadership and Management in Student Affairs
Theory to Practice (6 hours)
Students will participate in two internship experiences. Each internship includes 150 clock hours in a Texas State Student Affairs or Academic Affairs department or at nearby colleges or universities.

Electives (6 hours)
Students can select elective courses from a variety of graduate-level courses offered in various departments across campus. Students also have the option of doing study abroad for elective credit.
Many students take classes in the departments of:

  •  Curriculum and Instruction
  •  Sociology
  •  Political Science
  •  Communication Studies
