This program is for candidates who already possess a master’s degree in an education-related field. It consists of 8 courses, including two semesters of internship, leading to certification as a school administrator (pending passage of the TExES state certifying exam). Applicants who do not already have a graduate level curriculum or instruction course on their existing transcripts will also take Curriculum Design or Instruction Models.
Candidates for this program must have a master’s degree in an education-related field and one year of teaching experience in K-12 schools. Candidates who do not yet have the appropriate master’s degree may apply to our M.Ed. in Educational Leadership
Visit the Graduate College at http://www.gradcollege.txstate.edu. To select your major in the on-line application: Select “Teacher Certification,” then select “211.00 Educational Leadership – Principal”
Application Deadlines
| Summer I Admission | May 1 |
| Spring Admission | December 1 |
In addition to the Graduate College application, the Educational Leadership program also requires submission of the following documents to the Office of the Graduate College:
1. A copy of your official teaching certificate documenting initial teacher certification
2. A copy of your official teaching record documenting at least one year's teaching experience
3. Official graduate transcripts
Note: The GRE is NOT required for admission to the post-master’s principal certification program
The course schedule is designed for separate cohorts at both our San Marcos Main Campus and the Round Rock Higher Education Center. Cohorts start each Spring semester and each Summer 1 Session and provide an opportunity for graduate students to form a community of learners and professional practitioners, and to develop lasting collaborative networks. Click here for a matrix of cohort course schedules by semester
Students may vary from the cohort class schedule if desired (for example, if a student desires to take only one course in a semester). However, the student should then review the full course matrix to determine how and when they might take required courses. The course matrix is the intended class schedule, though courses may be cancelled for significant reasons (such as under enrollment).
Use this form and its attached guidelines as a guide to plan your course of study. If you believe you have already taken one or more of the required courses at Texas State or at another University, please contact Dr. Michael O’Malley (mo20@txstate.edu ) to see if that course/s can be applied to your principal certification program.
“Post-Master’s Principal Certification students do NOT take the Level One Assessment.”
Research Course: Post-Master’s Principal Certification students must take the special section of EDCL 6358 Integrative Seminar identified for cert-only students, and may not take another section of this course. This section is offered in Fall semesters only.
EDCL 6387 Internship in Educational Leadership 1 is offered in the Fall semesters only, and may not be taken in a student’s first semester.
Students who begin in this post-master’s principal certification program but who later decide to apply to our M.Ed. in Educational Leadership may transfer up to 6 credit hours into the M.Ed. In practice, this means that a student who wishes to transfer from this program to the M.Ed. needs to do so before beginning his or her 3rd course.
