01. POLICY STATEMENT

01.01 It is the policy of the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education & School Psychology to hire faculty holding an earned doctorate as the terminal degree from an accredited institution. The department consists of distinct academic fields and programs. Acceptable terminal degrees vary across these programs.

02. ACCEPTABLE DEGREES

02.01 Due to the interdisciplinary nature of fields of study within the department/school the following degrees are considered acceptable terminal degrees for faculty teaching graduate and post-baccalaureate course work in the specific disciplines noted below:

02.02 Adult Education (ADED) and Ph.D. in Education – Adult, Professional & Community Education (APCE)

Ed.D. in Adult and Higher Education

Ph.D. in Educational Human Resource Development/Adult Education

Note: Adult Education is an interdisciplinary field. Faculty who teach and publish in this field may hold doctoral degrees in psychology, sociology, anthropology, or business. Within these broader degree designations, the faculty member must have a record of research and publishing relevant to adult learning, adult development, or the education of adults.

Note: Regular Graduate Faculty must have an earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Counselor Education, preferably from a CACREP accredited program, or have a related doctoral degree, as specified in the list above, and have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a Counselor Education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013.

02.07 Acceptable degrees for faculty teaching baccalaureate courses also include a master’s degree including 18 hours in the teaching discipline:

Exception: Instructors of SAHE 4178 Student Leadership in Higher Education must have a master’s degree in any field and professional experience as a Residence Hall Director or other appropriate professional experience in a Student Affairs Division in higher education.
