Rod Schueller

Rodney C. Schueller is Director of Bands and Coordinator of Instrumental Performance and Ensembles at Texas State University-San Marcos, where he is a member of the Graduate Faculty. In addition to serving as chief administrator of the Department of Bands, he is Conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds. Dr. Schueller teaches undergraduate and graduate instrumental conducting and wind literature and serves on several committees in the School of Music. In the spring of 2007, Dr. Schueller received the Foundations of Excellence Award from the Texas State University Student Foundation as a Texas State University Distinguished Educator.

Ensembles under his leadership have received praise from composers Mark Camphouse, Rob Deemer, Richard Hall, Timothy Kramer, Timothy Mahr, Russell Riepe, Jack Stamp, Joe Stuessy, and Frank Ticheli among others. The Texas State University Wind Ensemble performed for the South Central Chapter Conference of the College Music Society in 2006 and for the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2007. They will perform for the Southwest Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association in the spring of 2008. Under his direction, the 2006 Texas State University Bobcat Marching Band was selected for presentation at a video session at the national conference of the College Band Directors National Association in Ann Arbor, Michigan in March of 2007.

Dr. Schueller earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance and Music Education from the University of Iowa (1994), a Master of Music degree in Wind Conducting from Indiana University (1997), and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University (2003). He studied wind conducting with Ray E. Cramer and John L. Whitwell, with additional studies in orchestral conducting with James Dixon and Leon Gregorian.

Dr. Schueller is a contributing author to four volumes in the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series published by GIA and has published articles in both the Bandmasters Review and The Instrumentalist. He presented a conducting clinic at the 2005 Texas Bandmasters Association Clinic and Convention in San Antonio. In December of 2007, Dr. Schueller will co-present a clinic with Dr. Jeffrey Gershman and Dr. Frank Ticheli at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.

Professor Schueller remains active as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor. He holds honorary memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Sigma Alpha Iota. He is currently a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, the College Music Society, and both the Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association.
