The Department of Bands in the Texas State University School of Music is excited to present our 2008 Summer Band Camps! Band students entering the seventh grade or above during the 2008-2009 school year are invited to attend these wonderful camps, held on the Texas State campus in San Marcos, Texas. San Marcos is located in the Hill Country of Central Texas, halfway between Austin and San Antonio. Its scenic beauty is complemented by such attractions as Aquarena Springs, Wonder World, and the San Marcos River. The Texas State Band Camps provide excellent performance and educational opportunities combined with enjoyable extracurricular activities for all participants. No other summer band camps offer the wide array of ensembles and courses found at Texas State University!

The Texas State Concert Camps will occur June 8-13 for students entering grades 7-12. Graduating seniors are accepted into the camp if they will be Texas State University students in the fall of 2008. Prominent music educators from throughout the nation have been selected to serve as clinicians and conductors for the camps.

All students will participate in a Concert Band as well as instrumental master classes and sectionals. Additionally, students may choose from the following classroom courses:

  • Beginning and Advanced Music Theory
  • Beginning and Advanced Rhythm Techniques
  • Band Conducting
  • Beginning and Advanced Class Piano
  • Beginning and Advanced Composition and Music Technology

Concert Bands
The camps will feature one or more concert ensembles in each level. The Middle School/Junior High School Wind Ensemble, the most select of the concert bands, will be conducted by Dr. Mary Ellen Cavitt, Director of Instrumental Music Education at Texas State University. Melissa Townsend, a successful and popular middle school band director in New Braunfels, Texas will conduct the Middle School/Junior High School Symphonic Band.

The High School Wind Ensemble will be conducted by Mr. John L. Whitwell, Director of Bands Emeritus and University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University. The opportunity to make music with Professor Whitwell is one students will not want to miss! Ms. Caroline Beatty, Interim Associate Director of Bands at Texas State University, will conduct the High School Symphonic Band. Caroline was a successful high school band director in Texas prior to beginning her university teaching career.

These ensembles will provide a wonderful musical experience with both classic and new literature for winds and percussion. All students will participate in one of these ensembles.

Salsa Band (Concert Camps)
The Salsa Band is the perfect opportunity to explore the various musical styles of Latin America. Professor John Lopez, Director of the award-winning Texas State Salsa del Rio Latin jazz ensemble, coordinates this program.

Additionally, all percussion students will receive instruction in the areas of hand drumming and Latin percussion. Students must play a salsa band instrument in order to audition for placement in this ensemble.

Jazz Band (Concert Camps)
Professor Freddie Mendoza, Director of Jazz Studies at Texas State University, directs the High School Jazz Band and will teach jazz improvisation on the high school level. Penny Compton, a middle school band director from Judson ISD, will lead the Middle School/Junior High School Jazz Band and teach middle school jazz improvisation. The ensembles serve seasoned jazz players as well as those who lack a jazz ensemble at their current schools. Students must play a jazz ensemble instrument in order to audition for placement in this ensemble.

Private Lessons
All students participating in the concert camps will have the opportunity to study privately with the distinguished applied faculty of our camp. Private lessons are available on all brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments at the subscription rate of $20.00 per half hour lesson. Students who wish to take full advantage of this program should bring at least one method or etude book as well as solo literature to camp. Payment will be made directly to them; please do not enclose payments for lessons with the deposit or final payment for camp.

SASI Marching Camps at Texas State University (June 15th - 18th)

The Texas State University Marching Camps will occur June 15-18, and are administered by SASI of Austin, Texas. They are designed to foster performance skills in three critical areas of the contemporary high school marching band: The Drum Major, Drumline and Colorguard. Further, the drumline camp will feature master classes in drum set, Latin percussion, and concert. Participants will receive intense instruction from regionally and nationally known clinicians on an individual and group basis. A demonstration in each of the three areas is presented on the last day of camp.

SASI Drum Major Clinic
Texas State University is pleased to once again host the SASI Drum Major Camp on our campus!

This camp is led by Mr. Ron Morrison, Director of Fine Arts for Pearland Independent School District, and Mr. Jeremy Spicer, Associate Director of Bands at Cedar Park High School.

The curriculum includes extensive training in areas such as conducting, marching fundamentals, leadership and more. The SASI Camp is recognized throughout the United States as one of the finest and most individualized camps in existence. Band directors from across the state of Texas have given this camp rave reviews! Students who will be a drum major in 2008, or who desire to one day be a drum major, should not miss this fantastic opportunity.

SASI Drumline and Percussion Camp
Designed for all levels of percussion students, the SASI Drumline and Percussion Camp is a perfect way to gain an advantage for both the fall marching season and the concert ensembles of the spring. Students need to bring their own instrument (snare, tenors, bass, cymbals), carrier, drum stand, and sticks/mallets. Keyboard percussion equipment will be provided.

The participants of this camp are placed into lines based on ability and will work on exercises and cadences that will prepare them for the demands of today’s modern drumline. Additionally, evening master classes will address performance techniques in various aspects of percussion performance.

The SASI Percussion Staff will serve as instructors for the drumline portion of the camp.

SASI Colorguard Camp
The SASI Colorguard Camp is designed for students with varying levels of proficiency.

The camp features training in movement, dance, weapons and flags. The participants are grouped by ability level and will be taught routines specially designed to develop individual skills for the busy marching season ahead.

Michael Floyd of the Phantom Regiment and Cedar Park High School will coordinate this camp along with the rest of the SASI Colorguard Staff including Lorenzol Waterhouse of Cedar Park High School and Candice Partridge of Leander High School.
