Tressica's Thoughts on Texas State

Why Texas State

I chose Texas State because of the Department of Communication Disorders. It has its own clinic on campus, which allows for a lot more chance for observation. And since the professors also work in the clinic, they have tons of experiences to share with us. I was a transfer student and was a little nervous about coming to a larger university, but once I got here and discovered such a diverse and friendly campus, I was excited.

Why Communication Disorders

I chose communication disorders because I feel that self-confidence is extremely important, and people who have speech, language and hearing disorders may miss opportunities because of a lack of confidence in their speech. I also have a passion for working with children, and being a speech language pathologist will give me an opportunity to interact with children and have a positive impact on their futures. Your voice is what allows you to be heard, and I feel it is important to use it with confidence.

Career Goals

I plan to obtain my master’s in communication disorders and then become a speech language pathologist in an elementary school. Ultimately, I want to have a private practice, and then become a professor.

Favorite Professor

Therese Kosary was my teacher for Introduction to Communication Disorders and my phonetics lab instructor. She also is my academic advisor. I liked her courses because she was so enthusiastic and always brought lots of extra materials to class. She is extremely laid-back and easy to talk to about anything.

Another favorite is Dr. Celeste Domsch. She is extremely easy to talk to and genuinely cares about each of her students. She has encouraged me to pursue things in my career and to possibly even go into research. Her passion for her work has inspired me to dig deeper into my major to learn things I couldn't find in a textbook.

My Most Valuable Learning Experience at Texas State

Texas State brought me out of my shell. I am more outgoing and have learned how to handle things on my own and adapt to different environments. I also have improved my time-management skills.

Best Studying Advice

I love note cards; I make them for everything. They are more portable than a notebook, and I can quiz myself while standing in line or waiting for class to start. Also, studying a little bit every day helps as well.

What I Like Most About Texas State

I love the diversity at Texas State and how everyone is friendly. There is an organization for everybody here.

What I Tell Future Students About Texas State

Texas State is a great place to be because the people are so friendly and you get the best of both worlds: San Marcos has a country feel, but it also has all the amenities that a city would have.
