Tommy's Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State
Of all the universities that I was accepted to and visited, Texas State was the only one that felt like home. It has the perfect balance of academic support, opportunities to get involved, and beautiful scenery.
Why Public Administration
With a strong background in public administration, I can accumulate the knowledge I need to reform our public education system, creating changes to ensure that every student will reach his or her dream.
Career Goals
I want to create a better K-12 public education system by becoming a superintendent of schools and getting heavily involved in education policy.
How My Program Will Help Me Reach My Goals
With a math minor, I can go through the alternative certification process to earn my teaching certificate. Teaching will give me the experience I need to become an effective school administrator. As I move up in administration, my major will give me the foundation to do what is necessary to ensure that my students receive the best education possible.
Favorite Professor
From the first day I sat through Ms. Mary Ellen Lund’s Mathematics for Elementary Teachers class, I knew that she would be my favorite professor at Texas State. She brings years of experience as a public school teacher and gives us tips on best practices, effective methods for explaining concepts, and ways to make math fun. Throughout the year, I seek her advice as I continue my work as a seventh-grade student math teacher for the national non-profit
Breakthrough Collaborative. I can only hope to be a quarter of the great teacher that she is.
My Most Valuable Learning Experience at Texas State
Being involved with student leadership, I’ve come to appreciate the collaboration that occurs here between student leaders and the university administration. The administration listens to the students. When I talk with student leaders from other campuses, they have a common complaint that their university administration doesn’t listen to the student voice. That makes me take an even deeper pride in this university and appreciate how much we all work together to make this great school even better.
