Roxanne's Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State
When I first visited Texas State, I was a little scared. I was one of the first in my family to travel away for college, and I had a strong connection with my family. Texas State and San Marcos offered a sense of comfort that was similar to my hometown. When I moved to San Marcos, I didn’t know anyone. Now I could not see myself anywhere else.
Why Accounting
I’m a senior in the
MAcy program, which is a five-year plan. When I finish, I will have my master of accountancy degree. The courses required for the program will qualify me to take the test to become a Certified Public Accountant. I’m enjoying the program because the professors are experienced in the topics they teach, and they share real-life experiences. Plus, the relationships Texas State has with many firms and companies offer a wide range of internship opportunities. I will intern with Deloitte, an auditing firm in Houston, during the fall 2008 semester.
Goals
Once I graduate I would like to create a scholarship program for students from my hometown, as I know the difficulties of funding your own education. The burden of funding my education was lessened with the help of Texas State, departmental and hometown scholarships. I would like to help others have the opportunities I’ve had as a student.
My Most Valuable Learning Experience at Texas State
When I moved away from home, I maintained the values that had been instilled in me from a young age. Seeing others try to fit in and act differently, or older than their age, reminded me that being your own person is important. To this day, I make my own decisions and don’t allow others influence me in a negative manner. Never be afraid to be yourself.
