Natalie’s Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State
I went to a UCA Cheerleading Camp at Texas State my freshman year of high school and fell in love with the campus’ beauty, fun atmosphere, and of course, the San Marcos River!
Why Fashion Merchandising
Fashion merchandising really allows students to use both their analytical and creative skills. There is a huge career opportunity with this major, and the classes are both fun and interesting.
My Internship and Career Goals
With the advice of teachers in my major, I was able to get an internship with Earthbound Trading Company in Dallas in summer 2008. My job title was assistant buyer. I worked about 30 hours a week helping the clothing and accessories buyer complete purchase orders for overseas and national merchandise. I also had the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas for a trade show and help pick out inventory for the spring season. I’m hoping that the company will hire me as a full-time buyer after I graduate. Eventually, I would like to open my own boutique/salon with my sister, who is a cosmetology student.
Favorite Professor
I have two favorite professors: Dr. Sharon Welkey and
Dr. Audrey McKinney. I had Dr. Welkey for my intro to fashion merchandising class my very first semester, and she helped me carve out a career path I’m going to love. Dr. McKinney was my professor for both philosophy and women’s studies. She is awesome because she is makes it easy to have interesting, open class discussions that really enrich the learning experience.
Most Valuable Learning Experience at Texas State
I have learned how to be confident when speaking to large and small groups of people. My presentation skills have really been strengthened because of all the assignments I have had in my courses.
Best Studying Advice
Study in a place that makes you feel calm and relaxed. Studying at a nice coffee shop always seems to help me!
My Clubs and Organizations
Student Foundation Fashion Merchandising Association, parliamentarian
Fashion Merchandising Advisory Board, co-chair
Orchesis Dance Company (sophomore year)
Awards and Scholarships

Department of Family and Consumer Sciences Highest GPA Award for sophomore class

Best Campus Hangouts
George’s on Salsa Night because there are always a lot of people and great dance music to help students unwind after a stressful week. As far as places to eat, I like the
Den, because I absolutely love the chicken tortilla soup in a bread bowl! When I want to relax, I go to the
art gallery in the Joann Cole Mitte Art Building.
Best San Marcos Hangouts
I like the Tantra Coffee Shop because it’s conveniently located just off the Square and always has great art shows and music. I also like to go to Sewell Park and
Texas State football tailgates and games.
What I Tell Future Texas State Students
You will love this university. There are great professors, a wide variety of majors to choose from, and San Marcos is a fun place to live. Go to Texas State and make sure you get involved with student organizations as much as you can because it will expand your college experience immensely.
