Melissa's Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State?
I chose Texas State because of the Clinical Laboratory Science major the university offered. This program is one of the best of its kind in Texas, and I am so glad I chose to come here.
I have recently applied for a fellowship with the Center for Disease Control. I also plan on attending medical school, but my ultimate goal is to research emerging infectious diseases.
Typical Class-day Schedule
This major does not have a typical class day. When I was taking my prerequisites, a typical day would be class and labs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Then I would go to work at the Alkek Library
until I came home to study in the evening. If I didn’t have to work, I would either do activities with my sorority or hang out with friends. During the spring and summer semesters of my senior year, I’ve been going to a hospital or clinic from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on most days and then coming home and doing my self-study. During the spring and summer semesters of our final clinical year, we only attend class for one week every month.
Why I Am Involved at Texas State
There are so many benefits to being involved in the campus community. It gives you the opportunity to meet friends, share your interests, and find your niche at Texas State. The Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists has allowed me to have a better relationship with my professors and fellow colleagues as well as given me scholarship opportunities, leadership positions and professional conventions. Mu Epsilon Theta is a Catholic service sorority that has allowed me to gain long-lasting friendships. It’s a group that I can connect with spiritually, and it allows me to reach out to the community with service.
Where I Relax
There are three places I really enjoy going to relax: Sewell Park
, Five-Mile Dam and University Camp
. The scenic views at these places are just astonishing, and the sound of the water really makes for a calming atmosphere. University Camp is a fun place to go for the weekend to have the feeling of “getting away,” yet not having to go very far.
What I Tell Future Texas State Students
The academics here are comparable to those at the University of Texas or Texas A&M. The professors are intelligent, approachable and are looking to help their students succeed in life. Texas State really tries to cater to many people from all walks of life, and you can see that in the campus diversity. I am happy with the choice I made, and you will be too.
