Leticia's Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State
I chose Texas State because of the quality of education and the high ranking it receives among colleges and universities across Texas.
Why Special Education
I chose this profession after working as a paraprofessional for students with autism. I became passionate about working with children with special needs, especially those who are not the typical students. I could relate somewhat since I am a nontraditional student, being married with two young children.
Career Goals
After graduation, I plan to work in a Title I school. I also plan to attend graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in autism or emotional behavior disturbances.
Typical Class-Day Schedule
The spring semester was much more “typical” for me than past semesters. I was in a classroom on Tuesdays in New Braunfels interning at County Line Elementary. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday I was in lectures in San Marcos.
My Favorite Professor
Dr. Kathryn Lee has been an amazing professor and mentor. I learned the most from her about the growth and development of adolescents. She has also given her time to guide me so that I could be successful at Texas State.
Valuable Learning Experience
Having the opportunity to work in my field with children of all ages has been invaluable. I now have experience at the primary, secondary and 18-22 transitional programs.
Best Studying Advice
Use every possible resource offered at Texas State. I have used the
Writing Center,
Career Center, computer labs, library, etc., and would make the trip from San Antonio to use those services.
Honors, Awards and Scholarships
Dean’s List, spring and fall 2008
Anita Ogden Byington Scholarship
What I Do in My Free Time
I love to fish, hunt and camp. I also like to scrapbook. However, they take second place when it comes to spending quality time with my husband and children.
Best Campus Hangout
The
LBJ Student Center, because there is food and the bookstore. It’s central to campus, too.
What I Like Most About Texas State
The diversity of students, professors and faculty.
What I Tell Future Students About Texas State
There is something for everyone to be involved on campus and in the surrounding communities. There are so many opportunities given at Texas State and that is the reason the university ranks so high among other Texas colleges and universities.
