Kendra's Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State
I was first interested in Texas State because its location is a good balance between far enough from San Antonio and not too far. When I began visiting the campus, I was awestruck by the beautiful river and ponds and the kindness of the students.
Career Goals
I plan to be a passionate and creative elementary school teacher.
How My Program Will Help Me Reach My Goals
My major has allowed me to study how children learn. I will use that knowledge to teach in a way that is most conducive to each child’s unique way of learning.
Favorite Professors
Doc Augustin teaches geography in a way that focuses on people rather than the physical aspects of the world; he is also very personable and down to earth.
Ms. Glenda Carnes, a music education instructor, teaches how music can be used to turn a boring class into a class that students look forward to attending; she is enthusiastic, creative, and she has the ability to turn a stressed student into one who is just happy to be alive and in her presence.
Ms. Eloiese Krabbenhoft, an art education instructor, taught me about the value of using art in the classroom and how to help every child feel successful.
A Valuable Learning Experience at Texas State
I had no digital media experience before coming to Texas State, so I went into Eloiese Krabbenhoft’s digital media classroom fearful of the unknown. From the very beginning Mrs. Krabbenhoft was a positive influence as I struggled to learn applications in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. She helped me see that mistakes are the only ways of learning, and in making mistakes we become better at what we’re trying to do.
My Clubs and Organizations
Black Women United, secretary
Gospel Expressions Association
Why I'm Involved
Black Women United is often described as a “sister circle.” It’s a networking environment that encourages friendships and mentorships, community service, and the overall growth of primarily black women. Gospel Expressions Association, or should I say G-E—A!, is a wonderful blend of contemporary gospel music and Bible study. People join this gospel choir for various reasons, but they stay because it makes them better people.

What I Tell Prospective Texas State Students
Get involved on campus — it helps you form meaningful relationships with people who will become close friends or mentors. Challenge yourself to do far greater things than you previously thought you could — you’ll surprise yourself with your own growth and success.
