I chose Texas State because it was only 30 minutes away from home, and when I came on Bobcat Day, I saw such a diverse community and I knew I would fit right in.
I have always wanted to be a teacher, and if I ever had to teach a subject it would be science or math. I also knew Texas State has a great education program, so it seemed like an easy choice. Also, members of my family went here, so it’s kind of been a tradition.
I want to teach and coach, if possible going to back to my old school district. If not, then Teach Across America has always been an option for me. Being able to have an impact on a student’s life has always been a passion of mine, and the best way I know to do that is by teaching. I plan on going to graduate school. Currently, I’m looking into the special education program, focusing on autism/applied behavior analysis here at Texas State.
Currently, I am focusing on my math classes; I changed my major recently so now I’m taking a whole bunch of math classes. They are helping me reach my goal by learning different ways to teach math. I never knew there were so many techniques to the subject.
One word: Busy. I am in school full-time and have classes Monday through Friday. I also work in the Finance and Economics Department in McCoy College as a student assistant. After classes and work Tuesdays and Thursdays, I’m going to organization meetings.
Go to class, use the resources on campus, and don’t be scared to talk to your professors. When you take the time to sit and talk with your professor about problems you are having with the class, they are willing to help. Also get to know your faculty; numerous times I’ve been able to sit and talk to people like Ms. Jonnie Wilson, Mr. Terrence Parker, Ms. Beverley Woodson-Day along with many others, and they are very beneficial people to know on campus. They want the best for students here at Texas State.
Black Women United, Black Student Alliance, PAWS Preview, African American Leadership Conference, R.E.A.L. Retreat, Covo/Luna Associated Student Government election campaign, Alternative Spring Break Committee 2009, Martin Luther King Jr. Committee 2009
The people in my organizations are a backbone for me; I lost my best friend my first semester here and the support and encouragement I received kept me going and helped me continue school here. All of the men and women involved in them are always there for you, if it’s homework you need help with or a shoulder to cry on, they got you. Also you are able to learn how to work with others from different backgrounds and walks of life.
I love that Texas State is a growing university, but you don’t feel like a number. Many faculty and staff want to get to know you and help you, and that’s a wonderful feeling. Also, it is diverse and everyone fits in somewhere.
It is so friendly. Everyone I have met has been genuine and nice. It’s surprising for a university to have that quality with more than 30,000 students, so that’s what makes it a unique campus.
