Fernando's Thoughts on Texas State

Why Texas State

I chose Texas State for its reputation of preparing well-trained teachers since 1903, plus it is close to my hometown. I felt this university would give me the opportunity to become a great teacher and learn to be an independent person while maintaining closeness with my family. Also, when I walked onto the campus for the first time, its peaceful environment welcomed me home.

Why Studio Art

Since I was a child, I have had an appreciation for art, and I always have been encouraged by my teachers to pursue a career in the art field. I have learned that teachers have the privilege of directing, motivating and inspiring young adults to become successful. I believe that through art I can teach students a different way to present themselves to the world, as well as alleviate difficulties in life and learn about themselves.

Favorite Professor

My ceramics professor, Michel Conroy. Her assignments challenged me to become a better artist. Throughout the course, she supported, encouraged and inspired me toward constant improvement. She is a great instructor, role model, mentor and professional.

Valuable Learning Experience

I learned to take advantage of the free resources offered on campus. After my freshman semester, I had a less-than-desirable GPA, but after taking advantage of Student Support Services and the Counseling Center, my GPA rose dramatically. I believe that because of this learning experience, I have succeeded both academically and personally. I have become a well-rounded student.

Best Studying Advice

Learn to manage your time, do not procrastinate and find the time of day when you are most energetic. Recognize the things that distract you and intentionally avoid them.

What I Like Most about Texas State

What I like most is the atmosphere created by the good energy from the student body and the environment. Everyone I have come across is friendly, and the campus is beautiful.
