Bailey’s Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State
The first time I toured Texas State, I knew this is where I wanted to be, that coming here would allow me to go to a big-name school without being lost in the numbers. I have a great relationship with all my professors, and I have made lots of lasting friendships. I didn’t just find a great education, I also found a home.
Why Therapeutic Recreation
I chose therapeutic recreation because it is a way I can combine my two favorite things: recreation and helping people. I really enjoy working in a psychiatric setting with adolescents who have chemical dependencies or who are caught up in gang violence. I hope to show teens that participating in recreational activities can be a good outlet for stress, can keep them healthy and can give them the tools they need in the adult world.
Career Goals
One day I want to open an after-school facility for at-risk youth, offering an alternative to dangerous lifestyles.
How My Major Will Help Me Reach My Goals
I am fortunate to be in a program that is very hands-on. By being a part of therapeutic recreation at Texas State, I am at least one step ahead of the game in knowledge of the field, and I will be more prepared entering my certification exams and my career.
Favorite Professor
My favorite professor would definitely be Dr. Lyn Litchke. She has taught me so much about special populations, and she is always there to meet with me about anything. She always has a smile on her face and really gets me excited about entering the therapeutic recreation field.
Best Learning Experience
Through my many different on-campus jobs I have learned a lot about diverse populations. Being able to work, communicate and live with all kinds of people has helped me be more confident in various situations in which one-on-one interaction is involved.
Best Studying Advice
Take advantage of all the free help you can get. The writing center, math lab and SLAC are all there to help, so use them!
My Organizations
I have been a captain of the women’s lacrosse team and an elected member of the
Sport Club Alliance.
Benefits of Membership
The best thing about being a member of a sport club is all the professional experience. I get to participate in practice and games, and as an officer I also had to manage a budget, make hotel and travel reservations for 25 team members, make contacts with league coordinators for game schedules and network with several businesses for sponsorships and grants.
Favorite San Marcos Hangout
So cliché, but for sure the river. There is nothing better than lying out, playing volleyball or jumping in for a swim.
Where I Go To Relax
Boko’s Living Room. Power naps get me through many rough weeks.
What I Like Most About Texas State
I love the area. It is really beautiful here, and there are so many outdoor activities to participate in every day.
What I Tell People Interested in Texas State
Coming to Texas State will be the best decision you ever make. Here, you can enjoy getting a great education without being just another face in the crowd by getting involved, making connections and participating in all the school has to offer.
