Audrey’s Thoughts on Texas State
Why Texas State
I knew I wanted to be a special ed teacher, and Texas State is known to have an awesome College of Education
, so there was no better choice.
Why Special Education
Special ed is my passion. In high school, I was a mentor at the elementary school in Boerne. I was put in the special ed class and fell in love with the kids.
I want to teach life skills for a few years and then get my master’s in behavioral disorders/positive behavioral supports to become a behavioral specialist. As long as I am with the kids in the classroom, I’ll be happy.
How My Major Will Help Me Reach My Goals
I have had some amazing professors who have encouraged me and helped me prepare to be in the classroom. I had professors seek me out when my grades suffered my freshman year, and it really made me feel like I was a not just one of the thousands of faces on campus. Without the help of the professors and staff of the Education Department, I would not be as successful as I am now. I know I will keep in touch with them after I graduate, and I trust they will always help me and give me ideas.
I have to be honest, there is a three-way tie. Dr. Larry Wheeler was the first special ed professor I had, and he really helped keep my interest in special ed. He has such a good sense of humor. Dr. Amanda Boutot gave me so many ideas for my classroom. She always kept my attention. I feel confident I could take a step into a class tomorrow and teach because of her. Last but not least, Dr. Brenda Scheuermann has been such an amazing mentor to me. As well as being an amazing teacher, she has really gone out of her way to help me out and answer any questions I have.
Best Campus Hangout
The wall by the Education Building is where we all meet before class. The Education Building is where all my classes are, and I feel like I live there so I don’t wander far from that. I haven’t been through the quad in three semesters!
What I Like Most About Texas State
I have had some really awesome classes with awesome professors. I don’t know how many times I have come home after class and talked to my roommates about the things discussed in class. It says a lot when class is that interesting that I tell my roommates all about what I learned or what was said in a class discussion. I have really learned to think outside the box, and I feel like my teachers have trust in me that I will be a good teacher. I am really proud of that.
What I Would Tell Someone Interested in Texas State
I would say go for it. Everyone here is so nice, and I have met some of my best friends because I happened to sit next to them in a class. It will be the best four years of your life and definitely worth your money. It’s not too big and not too small, and San Marcos is in the perfect location because you can easily drive to Austin or San Antonio. They also have really great places to eat here, so that’s always a plus!
