The Texas State University Department of Bands and the San Marcos High School Bands are excited to announce the fifth annual Pre-UIL Concert Clinic. The clinic will take place on Thursday, March 25, Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 at the San Marcos High School Performing Arts Center. All high school concert ensembles are invited to participate in this event that is sure to provide a great benefit in preparation for contest.

All ensembles will be afforded a warm-up session upon their arrival. The groups will then take the stage to perform and record their UIL program, with recordings provided to the directors shortly after their performance. The groups will also be provided with taped comments from Dr. Rod Schueller, Director of Bands at Texas State University, and Dr. Caroline Beatty, Associate Director of Bands at Texas State University. The ensembles will then have an hour-long clinic with Mr. James F. Keene, Director of Bands Emeritus at the University of Illinois.

Upon completion of the clinic with Professor Keene, each ensemble will proceed to the sight-reading venue. The bands will go through the process of UIL sight-reading, run exactly as it will occur at contest. Upon completion of the initial sight-reading portion, Mr. Ferd Vollmar, former Director of Bands at Churchill High School and Director of Fine Arts in the Northeast Independent School District, will conduct a sight-reading clinic.

WARM-UP SESSION (Orchestra Hall)

7:05-7:50 AM: Band I

8:50-9:35 AM: Band II

11:35 AM-12:20 PM: Band III

1:20-2:05 PM: Band IV

3:05-3:50 PM: Band V

AUDITORIUM STAGE

8:00-9:30 AM: Band I

9:45 - 11:15 AM: Band II

12:30 – 2:00 PM: Band III

2:15-3:45 PM: Band IV

4:00-5:30 PM: Band V

SIGHT READING SESSION (Band Hall)

9:45-10:45 AM: Band I

11:30AM -12:30 PM: Band II

2:15-3:15 PM: Band III

4:00-5:00 PM: Band IV

5:45-6:45 PM: Band V (on the Auditorium stage)

INFORMATION:

WARM-UP SESSION: This will take place in the Orchestra Hall. Bands may enter the room at their scheduled time, or whenever the previous band vacates the room.

AUDITORIUM SESSION: The stage session will consist of a performance of the band’s UIL program, then an hour-long clinic with our guest clinician, Mr. James F. Keene.

SIGHT-READING SESSION: This portion of the event will take place in the Band Hall, and will be run exactly like a UIL event, complete with timings. After completion of the sight-reading, Mr. Vollmar will give a brief clinic on the band’s sight-reading performance.

RECORDING: Each band will be recorded and given a cd of their performance.

COST: $425 per ensemble.
