Concert Camp

June 10-15, 2012

Band students entering the seventh grade or above during the 2011-12 school year are invited to attend these concert camps held on the Texas State campus in San Marcos, Texas. Graduating seniors are welcome to attend if they will be Texas State students in fall 2012, and seniors planning to major in music can attend at a reduced rate.

All participants play in a concert band and attend instrumental master classes and sectionals. Students may also choose from the following classroom courses:

 
  • Beginning and Advanced Music Theory
  • Beginning and Advanced Rhythm Techniques
  • Band Conducting
  • Beginning and Advanced Class Piano
  • Beginning and Advanced Composition and Music Technology
  • World Music
  • Reed Making (for high school double reed performers)
  • Music in Media
 
Prominent music educators from throughout the nation serve as clinicians and conductors for the camps. No other summer band camps offer the wide array of ensembles and courses found at Texas State.

Concert Bands

  • The Middle School Concert Bands will be conducted by Robert Herrings, director of bands at Henry Middle School in Leander ISD and Mark Gurgel, Director of Bands at Kealing Middle School in Austin. Kealing Middle School performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago in December of 2009 and Henry Middle School will performed in December 2010! This achievement speaks to the excellence of these two teachers who are fantastic musicians and FUN people!
  • The High School Wind Ensemble will be conducted by Texas State University Director of Bands Dr. Caroline Beatty. Dr. Beatty is a dynamic conductor and educator who has worked extensively in both the college and high school arenas. Other recent conducting activity has included engagements with the Austin Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble and as a recording conductor for composers John Mackey and Stephen Barber.

Salsa Band

 

 

Salsa Band

The Salsa Band is the perfect opportunity to explore the various musical styles of Latin America. Professor John Lopez, director of the award-winning Texas State Salsa del Rio Latin jazz ensemble, coordinates this program.

 
All percussion students receive instruction in the areas of hand drumming and Latin percussion. Students must play a salsa band instrument to audition for placement in this ensemble. (Trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, percussion and vocals)
 

 

Jazz Band

 


Jazz Band

These ensembles, offered at both levels, serve seasoned jazz players as well as those who lack a jazz ensemble at their current schools. Students must play a jazz ensemble instrument in order to audition for placement in this ensemble. (Trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, drum set, bass) 

Private Lessons

Private Lessons

All concert camp participants have the opportunity to study privately with the camp’s distinguished faculty. Private lessons are available on all brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.

 
Students may sign up for one or two lessons after the camp orientation meeting on Sunday, June 10, 2012 in Evans Auditorium.
 
Private lessons are $20 per half hour and private lesson instructors will be present on the first day of the concert band camps to finalize schedules and receive payment for lessons. Payment should be made directly to the instructor; please do not enclose payments for lessons with the deposit or final payment for camp.
 
Students who sign up for private lessons should bring at least one method or etude book as well as solo literature to camp.

 

Daily Schedule

 
Rehearsals and classes meet from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day with an hour for lunch. Each evening the students will participate in a variety of activities such as dances, movies, small ensemble recitals and a talent show.

Housing Options

 
On-campus housing — Resident campers will be provided with three meals each day and housing accommodations in campus residence halls. Participants will need to bring bed linens, towels, toiletries and other personal items.
 
Commuter students — Students who wish to commute to the camps each day may do so. Commuters may purchase meals a la carte in the dining hall on campus or bring their own lunches.

Concert Band Camp Costs

 
On-campus student: $420 — tuition, room and board
Commuter student: $210 — tuition only
 
Deposit
A $150 deposit, included in the cost of the camp, is required at the time of application. Please make checks payable to Texas State University Band Camps. Registration deadline for resident campers is June 3.
 
Refund Policy
Tuition is 75 percent refundable if written notification is received on or before the first day of camp. A student who fails to appear on the first day of camp or leaves after registration will not receive a refund. 

Scholarships

 
Participants in Texas State’s concert band camps are eligible for several scholarships. High school students involved in the 2012 Texas All-State Bands (TMEA, ATSSB, TPSMEA, etc.) will receive $125 tuition scholarships. Students who advanced to All-Area level will receive $75 scholarships, while All-Region Band performers earn $50 scholarships. Additionally, double reed performers automatically qualify for $50 scholarships. Eight or more students from a single school earn a $50 scholarship each!
