The Butch Miles Jazz Rhythm Section Camp provides high school students a unique opportunity to study jazz rhythm section techniques with Grammy Award winning jazz drummer Butch Miles as well as other outstanding faculty. Students will work in individual instrument classes (bass, drums, guitar/keyboard) discussing the role of each instrument and work in full rhythm sections where the focus is proper swing, blues, jazz, Latin, funk and fusion styles.

Topics include:

• Stylistic interpretation
• Big band drum set-ups, fills and figure interpretation
• Small ensemble versus big band rhythm section
• Comprehensive bass line construction methods
• Jazz voicings and rhythmic comping for pianists/guitarists

Housing Options

On-campus housing — Resident campers will be provided with three meals each day and housing accommodations in campus residence halls. Participants will need to bring bed linens, towels, toiletries and other personal items.

Commuter students — Students who wish to commute to the camps each day may do so. Commuters may purchase meals a la carte in the dining hall on campus or bring their own lunches.

Jazz Rhythm Section Camp Costs

On-campus student: $410 — tuition, room and board
Commuter student: $195 — tuition only

Deposit — A $150 deposit, included in the cost of the camp, is required at the time of application. Please make checks payable to Texas State University Band Camps.
