Internships

Put Your Anthropology To Work In An Internship

Gain real-world knowledge and skills as part of a work experience that responds to the reasons you chose to major in anthropology. Interns work approximately 15 hours per week. Most placements are unpaid but offer a flexible apprenticeship position that leaves a much better resume footprint than almost any entry-level job.

2007 internship placements included the Austin Police Department, the Texas Historical Commission, the Center for Child Protection, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and GeoPassage Specialty Travel.
  • Earn 6 credit hours of anthropology elective credit.
  • Learn how to effectively research career opportunities, work up your resume and cover letter, and how to articulate to potential employers what your anthropology background contributes.
  • Reflect on your internship experiences with other interns in a small, close-knit, supportive group.
  • Receive valuable letters of recommendation or even a job offer.
By all estimates, students who complete an internship are much more likely to find employment upon graduation. But an internship will be more work than you will generally put into 6 hours of traditional course credit, and finding/getting the right placement requires a lot of advanced planning.

Deadline

Although there is no official deadline, you are strongly urged to begin work with internship director Neill Hadder mid-way through the semester prior to the one in which you want to intern. Planning for Summer and Fall internships begins in late March; planning for Spring begins in late October. The main reasons for these dates are (1) application deadlines set by some of the more desirable internship sites such as museums and (2) the deadlines of other internship programs that are sending out students competing for the same placements.

Who is eligible?

By the first day of your internship semester (not the date you begin planning):
  • You must have completed ANTH 1312, 2414, and 2415
  • Your cumulative GPA must be 2.5 or higher
  • You should be a declared anthropology major in your senior year or, with special approval, a junior who started at Texas State as a freshman
