This workshop is designed for advanced students and professionals interested in learning more about issues surrounding ancestry estimation, focusing primarily on complex population groups (e.g., population groups considered Hispanic). While most students and professionals know how to estimate ancestry using programs such as FORDISC, this workshop will discuss why forensic anthropologists can estimate ancestry and the complex factors surrounding ancestry estimation such as population structure, population history, secular change, the most appropriate data collection methods, and appropriate statistical methods for ancestry estimation. The format of the workshop will combine lecture and hands-on activities.
Topics: Human skeletal variation, data collection methods, geometric morphometrics vs. traditional craniometrics, interpreting and reporting ancestral estimation results
Dr. Spradley is an expert in ancestral estimation from human skeletal remains. She is internationally recognized for her work using craniometric data, especially geometric morphometrics, to understand biological relationships among various population groups.
