The Business of Grave Decorations

History

Prior to the 1930’s, Mexican Americans decorated their loved ones tombstones with seasonal flowers gathered from the countryside or from friends and neighbors gardens. Silk flower arrangements became increasingly common and are now considered a typical form of decoration for Mexican Americans. These arrangements are often sold along with such things as piñatas at small-scale, local flower shops surrounding predominantly Mexican American cemeteries. These shops began with local farmers selling their own flowers and evolved into the booming local businesses they are today.
